Background of the study
Fisherfolk communities have historically demonstrated resilience in the face of environmental and economic challenges. In Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State, the livelihoods of fisherfolk are deeply connected to marine resources, which are increasingly affected by climate variability, overfishing, and pollution (Olumide, 2023). To sustain their livelihoods, these communities have adopted various economic resilience strategies, including diversified fishing practices, community savings schemes, and cooperative marketing. Such traditional coping mechanisms help mitigate the adverse effects of environmental changes and market fluctuations (Akinola, 2024). However, the increasing pressures of modern challenges require a deeper understanding of these adaptive strategies. This study investigates the resilience mechanisms employed by fisherfolk, examining how these strategies maintain income stability and support sustainable resource management. It will assess both time-honored practices and emerging innovative approaches to resilience. By analyzing these strategies, the study aims to provide insights into enhancing the overall economic stability of coastal communities and inform policy interventions designed to support fisherfolk in a rapidly changing environment.

Statement of the problem
Fisherfolk in Ilaje face persistent challenges, including environmental degradation, market volatility, and regulatory uncertainties, which threaten their economic stability (Olumide, 2023). Although traditional resilience strategies exist, many fisherfolk struggle to adapt to rapidly evolving conditions, leading to inconsistent incomes and reduced productivity (Akinola, 2024). The lack of comprehensive support mechanisms and adaptive frameworks further exacerbates these vulnerabilities. As external pressures mount, there is an urgent need to assess the effectiveness of existing resilience strategies and identify gaps that compromise the economic sustainability of fisherfolk. This study seeks to evaluate these issues and propose measures to strengthen resilience and promote sustainable livelihood practices among coastal communities.

Objectives of the study (3):

  1. To evaluate the economic resilience strategies employed by fisherfolk in Ilaje.

  2. To identify challenges that hinder the effectiveness of these strategies.

  3. To propose recommendations for enhancing fisherfolk resilience.

Research questions (3):

  1. What resilience strategies are employed by fisherfolk in Ilaje?

  2. What challenges limit the effectiveness of these strategies?

  3. How can policy and community initiatives improve economic resilience?

Research Hypotheses (3):

  1. Resilience strategies significantly mitigate income variability among fisherfolk.

  2. Environmental degradation negatively impacts traditional coping mechanisms.

  3. Enhanced community support improves economic resilience.

Significance of the study
This study provides essential insights into the economic resilience of fisherfolk in Ilaje, emphasizing adaptive strategies that safeguard livelihoods amid environmental and economic challenges. The findings will inform policymakers and community leaders on how to strengthen support systems and promote sustainable practices, ultimately contributing to long-term coastal development (Olumide, 2023; Akinola, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating economic resilience strategies among fisherfolk in Ilaje Local Government Area, focusing on traditional and adaptive coping mechanisms.

Definitions of terms (3):

  1. Economic Resilience: The ability to withstand and recover from economic shocks.

  2. Fisherfolk: Individuals engaged in fishing and related activities.

  3. Adaptive Strategies: Measures employed to adjust to changing conditions.
